Exclusive: A man accused of luring people into a Melbourne hotel room using Grindr – where he allegedly stole their ID documents and used them to commit fraud – was granted bail despite police warning that he had failed to emerge at a Sydney court hearing, prompting a NSW magistrate to issue a warrant for his arrest.
Dong Qiao Li, also sometimes spelt as Dongqiao Li, was arrested at a hotel on Bourke Street in Melbournes CBD on April 11 and taken away in handcuffs.
He was later charged with several offences, including obtaining financial advantage by deception and attempting to obtain financial advantage by deception. Each of the financial advantage charges carries a maximum penalty of up to 10 years in prison under Victorian law.

Dating app Grindr says it is "in communication" with police in the ACT to support the investigation into alleged homophobic attacks in Canberra.
In July, three men reported being lured to meetings by fake or deceptive profiles on the app in separate incidents, alleging they were then assaulted and, in some cases, robbed and subjected to homophobic slurs.
In a statement released overnight, a spokesperson for Grindr, which is based in the United States, said the app has a "zero-tolerance policy for discrimination, harassment, and abusive behaviour".
"We work hard to ensure a safe and authentic environment free of harmful and fake accounts, scammers, and bad actors," the spokesperson said.
"Grindr has always taken its role as a connector for the LGBTQ+ community very seriously. We are notified that in certain instances, digital platforms such as ours are used to target LGBTQ+ people."

Two Men Jailed For Using Grindr In Robberies Across Sydney
Two Sydney men hold been sentenced to more than six years for the robberies of five men they arranged to meet through gay dating app, Grindr.
Andrew James Tanswell, 41, was sentenced to prison for six years and eight months, with a non-parole period of five years, and George Phoenix Leilua, 37, was sentenced to six years and two months with a non-parole period of four years.
As per The Guardian, New South Wales district court judge Andrew Colefax found the two men had set up Grindr accounts and arranged to meet men under false pretences.
Tanswell and Leilua threatened their victims, forcing them to hand over their phone and bank logins, before stealing currency from their accounts.
The incidents took place between May and June , with the pair stealing more than $22, from five victims across Western Sydney. On one occasion, the men also stole a victims mobile phone, $ in cash, various identity documents and his Medicare card.

Sydney IT manager accused of raping schoolboy he met on Grindr is granted bail
A Sydney man accused of raping a schoolboy outside his family residence after meeting him on a gay dating app is to continue being on bail.
Moud Nuri, 40, faced a charge of sexual intercourse without consent when he fronted Penrith Court.
Police have alleged Mr Nuri met the teen on Grindr where they exchanged photos, messages, personal details and then planned to meet.
But when the year-old deleted the app and stopped contact, it is alleged Mr Nuri drove to his place on the afternoon of September
Mr Nuri, who works as an IT project manager, is accused of pushing the lad to the ground in his front yard and sexually assaulting him.
The teenager's mother heard screaming and ran outside to support her son before Mr Nuri got into his car and drove away.
The alleged victim was taken to the Children's Hospital at Westmead where he was examined and treated for shock.
Two days later, Mr Nuri was arrested at his Kellyville Ridge home before he was charged at Riverstone Police Station in north west Sydney
