INTERVIEW: DAVID TAYLOR: Say Hello To The New Balans
Have you seen the modern Balans? Well, it’s not strictly called Balans anymore. We delve into the world of Balans Soho Society and why it’s all change at London’s most famous gay eatery.
For those in the recognize, Balans Soho Society is a stalwart fixture on the Soho scene. Every king, queen and fairy has walked through its doors to be waited on by some of the most beautiful people in the business, to lap up its gloriously transitory environment and to be served the leading salmon on toast at 5AM in the morning after a heavy evening of Heaven. We communicate with the owner, DAVID TAYLOR to see what’s new, what’s changing and if the hot waiters will still be a permanent fixture.
JH: When Balans began life, Soho was at its heart and, in particular, the gay community. Is this the new guise of Balans and will the gay community play an essential role or still be considered an important consumer?
DT: Nothing will change and we will be as gay friendly as ever. Our simple mission and instruction (as it has always been) is to indulge and enjoy
Celebrating 30 Years of Balans with Founder David Taylor
In the middle of lunch service on a Friday in May, seated in the corner of a bustling Balans, a well-dressed, pea coat-adorned gentleman was sipping on a flat white. As I approached David Taylor, co-founder of Balans, for this interview, he admitted his nerves in conducting the next 40 mins of our conversation. “I’m not very good at these things” he warned me. And so began our sparkling conversation re-visiting the superb, the mad and the best bits of Balans’ 30 year history and what the future holds for Soho’s gem.
Tell us about the early days as the Old Compton Café
“It started as a sandwich shop, quite diverse from today’s sandwich destinations like Pret A Manger. They are a lot less common now, but I believe you can still find some in the City.”
Can you remember any notable orders in those early days?

Tabitha Taylor, the ex-wife of controversial Missouri Pastor David E. Taylor of Joshua Media Ministries International claims he engaged in multiple extramarital affairs during their relationship and got her pregnant before they were married.
Speaking out in a recent broadcast on Facebook Live, Tabitha explained that she is coming forward with her story now as a warning to the church against the abusive and manipulative behavior of pastors operating contrary to Scripture.
"We're teaching people that it's OK to sin. We're teaching people that it's OK to live unrighteously but God is gonna take judgment to the household of God. He is. He's gonna judge us if we don't fetch it together people of God. We're preaching in the pulpit and we're sleeping with our members. We're preaching in the pulpit and we're abusing the sheep. We're preaching in the pulpit and we're not doing right by the people of God. We're not walking in love. We're destroying people's mar
Coffee & Conversation: An Evening with Rev. David Taylor
An evening of insight, affirmation, and love!
Coffee and Conversation is a series that began last fall with an enlightening evening with Stacey Chomiak (author of Still Stace, My Gay Christian Coming-of-age Story).
On Tuesday April 16, we once again invited a Special Guest, Rev. David Taylor to help us keep this important conversation going. [See the video at the end of this article.]
David’s unique story-telling style uses song, personal reflections, and humour. The hymns and songs that formed the soundtrack of his adj Christian life evoked many emotional memories for those present.
Despite periods of pain and uncertainty David’s lifelong love of God never deserted him, though his faith was tested as he became aware that he was “different.” As a gay Christian youth, raised in a denomination that was far from affirming, he felt unloved by Jesus, and was desperate to not be queer.
If it had not been for the Lord on my side, where would I be?
