Same-sex marriage has been the law of the land for nearly two years — and in some states for even longer — but researchers can already detect positive health outcomes among couples who have tied the knot, a University of Washington study finds.

For years, studies have linked marriage with happiness among heterosexual couples. But a study from the UW School of Social Work is among the first to investigate the potential benefits of marriage among LGBT couples. It is part of a national, groundbreaking longitudinal study with a representative sample of LGBT older adults, known as &#;Aging with Pride: National Health, Aging, Sexuality/Gender Study,&#; which focuses on how historical, environmental, psychological, behavioral, social and biological factors are associated with health, aging and quality of life.

Same-Sex Marriage: Everyone Should Hold the Right to Love

Dominique Davis

Throughout my life, I have been prosperous enough to get the chance to know very determined and whole-hearted people. One of the most driven people I understand would have to be my competitive volleyball coach from high school. Every single day before perform, he would gather us all in a circle and firmly say, “You girls must always brawl for what you feel in, and never back down from a challenge.” While he told us this every day for several years, none of us ever realized that our coach too had been fighting a very hard battle for years &#; trying to verb his male partner. I can honestly say that I have never seen two people so in love and happy with each other. Due to the fact that they are a gay couple, they are not qualified to do the one thing that they long to do, which is get married. Although it is one of the toughest battles to combat, my coach still continues to fight. He will fight and stay hopeful until he gets the justice that he and all other gay couples deserve.

Marriage equality improved security, stability, and life satisfaction for same-sex couples

New research by the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law finds that marriage equality has had a profound positive effect on the security and well-being of LGBTQ+ people.

Many married same-sex couples surveyed said marriage improved their sense of safety and security (83%), life satisfaction (75%), and relationship stability (67%). In addition, marriage has influenced how same-sex couples aid and depend on each other. Approximately one in five couples have contributed to each other&#;s education costs, provided caregiving for health issues, disabilities, or aging, or relocated when their spouse got a new job.

In June , the Supreme Court’s decision in Obergefell v. Hodges extended marriage equality throughout the U.S. Almost two-thirds (63%) of the couples surveyed married post-Obergefell.

About 80% of the couples surveyed were very (41%) or somewhat (38%) concerned that the Obergefell decision would be overturned. One-quarter (25%) had taken steps to protect themselves and t

What Should Christians Think about Same-Sex Marriage?

Why This Issue Matters

I’m a pastor. My concern is with the church — what she believes, what she celebrates, and what she proclaims. Achieving some legal and political end is not my primary calling and yet, I’m concerned that many younger Christians — ironically, often those most attuned to societal transformation and social justice — do not see the connection between a traditional view of marriage and human flourishing.

Many Christians are keen to resurrect the old pro-choice mantra touted by some Catholic politicians: personally opposed, but publicly none of my business. I want Christians to see why this issue matters and why—when same-sex marriage became the law of the land—the integrity of the family was weakened and the freedom of the church was threatened.

I know this is an increasingly unpopular line of reasoning, even for those who are inclined to accept the Bible’s teaching about marriage. Perhaps you believe that homosexual behavior is biblically unacceptable. And yet, you wonder what’s wrong with supporting same
